A police officer who came to the scene said he could tell that Melgoza had been drinking alcohol. When the news about the crash reached Bradley University, the students had a special event to remember the two people, Andrea Rosewicz and Paul Prowant, who died.

Later on, the students did a demonstration because they found out that even though Stephanie Melgoza was facing serious charges, she was still allowed to go to her graduation ceremony. But later it was revealed that while she could get her diploma, she was not allowed to actually be a part of the ceremony.

After the event, Stephanie Melgoza’s lawyer, Kevin Sullivan, shared that his client felt sorry and wanted to tell people how dangerous it is to drive after drinking. Judge Tim Cusack replied that people who drive drunk should get tough punishments to stop more accidents from happening.

Judge Cusack said the system tries to both punish and help people change. He has to find a balance between them. The families of the two people who were hurt wanted Stephanie Melgoza to be in prison for a maximum of 28 years.

They said Stephanie chose to drink and drive that night, even though she knew it was very risky. Because Stephanie spent time at home and a short time in custody, she needs to serve around 85% of her punishment.
