The Barnetts were really happy to bring the little girl into their family. They had experience taking care of children with special needs, like their son Jacob, who was really smart but had autism.
As time passed, the Barnetts started to wonder about Natalia’s age. They found things that made them unsure, like seeing that she had grown-up body features like pubic hair and having a period. They got even more worried when they had a playdate with another six-year-old girl with the same condition, but Natalia seemed older.
But what worried them even more were Natalia’s actions, as Michael says. He claims she said she wanted to hurt them and even held a knife near their bed at night. He also says she did bad things on purpose, like making a mess and scaring their son Jacob. Michael even says she tried to harm their family and poison Kristine before doing something dangerous with an electric fence.
They took Natalia to many doctors, and one of them said she had something called psychopathy. In 2012, they went to a court and were able to change Natalia’s age from eight to 22, according to what people said after looking at different things.
Because of this, the Barnetts didn’t have to take care of Natalia anymore, but they got her a place to live close by. People who lived near her helped out. But those neighbors began to worry about how Natalia acted. She even called the emergency number on herself and said she was following one of the people who lived there.
Then, they got Natalia another place to live in Lafayette, Indiana. But later, they moved to Canada for their son’s schooling. This part of the story has caused a lot of arguments because some people say the Barnetts left someone who needed help.

In an earlier part of the show’s last episode, we meet Freddie. He explains that he talked to Kristine online when she and Michael first adopted Natalia. Freddie has the same condition as Natalia, and Kristine wanted advice. But later, their messages became about things that are private, and Freddie showed proof of their talks and some pictures Kristine sent that were not appropriate.
Kristine surprisingly messaged Freddie and said she wanted him to go out with Natalia. Freddie got scared by this and didn’t reply because he thought it was really strange.
