Did Curious George have a Tail: But there’s a new study, which means it hasn’t been checked by other smart people yet, but it will be soon. This study wants to figure out why many people remember the same things wrong.

They did some experiments. In one, they asked 100 English-speaking Americans to look at pictures. Each picture had a famous character or logo, one with a common mistake and one with a different mistake. People had to say which one they thought was right and how sure they were. For example, they had to ask if the Playboy bunny is naked, wearing a fancy bowtie, or meeting with the boss.

That study found that when people were shown some pictures, they often remembered them in the wrong way. For example, they thought C3PO had two golden legs instead of one silver, Curious George had a tail, the Fruit of the Loom logo had a cornucopia, the Monopoly Man had a monocle, Pikachu had a black tip on his tail, the Volkswagen logo had no gaps between the letters, and Waldo from Where’s Waldo? Didn’t have a cane.

In the second study, they checked if people were not looking carefully at the important parts of the pictures. They used special tracking software that showed people did look at the wrong features before making their mistakes.

In the third study, they searched for pictures on Google to see how often people saw the features they were getting wrong. They discovered that some things, like C3PO’s legs, were not shown often, but others, like the Monopoly Man’s face, were seen a lot. So people were not making mistakes just because they didn’t see the right picture often.

In the last study, they asked people how well they knew the thing they were studying. People who knew it well had to draw it from memory, and those who didn’t know it well were shown the correct picture and then asked to draw it right after seeing it. Some of these people were really good at drawing.

The researchers noticed that some of the same memory mistakes happened in both groups of people. Everyone drew C3PO with golden legs; the Monopoly man had extra eyeglasses, and Curious George had extra tails.

I have to admit, I wasn’t surprised by any of this, except for how good some people were at drawing. Check out this perfect Pikachu and the Monopoly Man who looks like he’s saying, “Go directly to jail!” That’s impressive!

But the authors’ main idea is that there isn’t just one explanation for the Mandela Effect. They think different things can make people remember stuff incorrectly. Like some mistakes might happen because of what we expect to see (our “schema”), some because of what we actually saw (our visual experience), and some for other reasons we don’t understand yet.

Some smart people did a study and said, “Hey, these things called ‘false memories’ are happening, but they happen for different reasons.” It’s kind of like when you remember something that didn’t really happen, but there are lots of ways it can happen.

Now, let me explain what might have gone wrong with some of these things:

Waldo having a cane: Well, this one isn’t even a big deal because not many people are really sure if he had a cane or not. Some people might not think the cane is super important to who Waldo is. But for me, a big Waldo fan, I know he had a cane because it helped him do cool stuff in his adventures. But if you’re just a casual Waldo fan, you might not notice it.

I didn’t even realize that C3PO had one silver leg until I saw a toy that showed it. But guess what? The toy from the 1980s didn’t even have a silver leg, and I spent a lot of time playing with it. In the other Star Wars movies, he didn’t have a silver leg, either.

The old Star Wars movies hardly ever showed his legs, and it’s not very noticeable. So, why would anyone except a superfan even notice? Some people really love these details, but for most of us, it’s not a big deal.

Curious George not have a tail: So, Curious George is always called a “good little monkey” who’s very curious. And monkeys usually have tails, right? But there’s this one monkey without a tail, and it’s rare. People think monkeys have tails, so it’s weird that Curious George doesn’t.

The VW logo has a gap between the letters: Some folks think the VW logo looks nicer without a gap between the letters. It’s simpler that way. People remember it without the gap because they like the clean look. I’m impressed that some people could draw the logo correctly from memory. If I tried, I’d probably get it all wrong.
