Capital of Guyana, city Georgetown is the largest urban centre of the country and located on the mouth of Demerara River on the Atlantic Ocean coast.

Georgetown has a population of 118,363 and serves as a financial services, retail and administrative centre of Guyana. It is also nicknamed as ‘Garden City of the Caribbean.’

The city was made capital for the first time by French when they colonized in 1782 and called it Longchamps. The Dutch restored it two years later and renamed it as Stabroek after Lord of Stabroek and President of the Dutch West India Company, Nicolaas Geelvinck.

In April 1812 the city was renamed as Georgetown in honor of King George III.

Urban Centre

Georgetown houses CARICOM headquarters, which is the Administrative Arm of the Caribbean Regional Integration Organization. It is a home to seaport too and has Guyana’s international airport, Cheddi Jagan International Airport/Timehri. The city is also well connected with the regional countries through newly expanded Ogle Airport. It accounts a large portion of the country’s GDP.

Transportation

Guyana is well connected with major overseas cities including Toronto, Panama City, New York City, Bridgetown, Port of Spain and Miami through Cheddi Jagan International Aiport, which was earlier known as Timehri Airport. The Ogle Airport also serves the city with direct flights from neighboring countries.
