A young friend has just purchased a little 20 ft sailboat and has decided to take the boat from its current position in Sydney Harbour round to Berowra Water approximately 25 kilometers north. The trip will take them out the heads and up the coastline of NSW. The discussion has been what precautions they may need to take in order to get there safely. Below is a list of actions that are a must for anyone planning to sail.

Top Tips for Sailing

When first taking the boat out have a person on-board that can actually sail. Sounds simple and saves a lot of angst.
Ensure that the boat is seaworthy and that the sails are in good order.
When planning a sailing trip it pays to keep a watchful eye on the weather. This should be undertaken at least for a few days prior to departure.
Ensure that there are enough serviceable life-jackets on board for all persons who will be on the boat.
Ensure that the ship to shore radio works properly and that there is someone on board that knows how to use it.
Have at least one mobile telephone on-board as a backup.
Take sea sickness tablets – there is nothing worse than being ill and at sea.
Ensure that the motor works and is not likely to seize up.
Before you start your trip inform the local VMR (voluntary marine rescue). Include your destination and your estimated time of arrival (e.t.a), how many people on-board (p.o.b), name and colour of yacht.
Wednesday Afternoon Gentlemen Sailors
The best scenario for people wishing to learn the ropes of sailing is to attend one of the many WAGS (Wednesday Afternoon Gentlemen Sailing) races. These races are run from nearly every sailing club around Australia. There are also Sunday afternoon get-togethers. Contact your local sailing club for more information. They will be only too willing to assist newcomers.

When It Pays to Know the Weather

The weather is arguably the most important factor where sailing is concerned. It is also important to understand what will happen should the winds drop (die down), or increase in strength. Should the winds drop, then it pays to have a motor that will move the boat at a reasonable speed, preferably at a faster pace than the the tide, especially if you are traveling against the tide. This is a good reason to enquire as to the tide times for the areas you will be traveling through.

There is nothing nicer than having the wind blow through your hair as the boat skips and slides through the water. A day out sailing can be the best fun ever. However it can quickly turn into a nightmare on water if the proper safety precautions are not adhered to. Remember use a good quality sunscreen with a 30 spf factor. Getting sun-burnt can spoil the day. Enjoy the experience. Sailing is a great sport.
