Mention Spring Break, and what comes to mind? Often, images of drunk, bikini-clad sorority girls, embarassingly loutish frat boys taking over beaches in South Beach and Jamaica, and other signs of debauchery. Right? Well, not necessarily. In an interview for this column, a representative of Christy Sports described the best reasons to consider Spring Break ski vacations. Randy England elucidated quite clearly that there’s more to March and April travel than just getaways to Florida and the Caribbean; this was very helpful information for a snowbird like Luxury Travel!

Best Reasons to Take a Spring Break Ski Trip

It’s warmer in early spring – instead of bundling up, skiers can wear lighter clothes (some even strip down to tee shirts). This allows for greater flexibility for those who chill easily and wear thick down coats in the winter.

The sun is more consistently bright, with less snowy, overcast days – winter sports fans can appreciate the beauty of the mountains, and the “photo opportunities” last all day. With the clear blue skies, sunscreen in more important than ever, of course.

The snow is at its highest level in March and early April, having accrued throughout the winter and yet to melt. Spring snow is also soft (particularly in the Western US, which gets piles of powder), and easy for beginners just learning to ski.

Most ski resorts are still open until mid-April at least, with end-of-season parties and festivals. The atmosphere is more relaxed and mellow.

The end-of-season relative warmth and fun atmosphere also means that restaurants open their terraces for BBQ and beer sessions for lunch and dinner – skiers can take a break from the slopes to enjoy each others’ company, and enjoy the food and scenery.

Because it’s nearing the end of the ski season, many discounts are easily available – this includes cheaper lift tickets and ski vacation packages that include hotel deals. Even high-end hotels at luxury ski resorts offer discounts.

Ski gear and clothes are almost always on sale in the Spring – luxury brands of everything from thermal undies to wool caps to snowboards and other winter sports gear are priced to move. Popular stores in upscale ski resort towns (such as Vail) want to make room for their spring and summer activities and items.

Sure, the Caribbean is gorgeous, but so are the Rocky Mountains. These seven valid reasons to spend Spring Break on a ski and winter sports vacation make for a memorable and affordable luxury trip (those discounted lift tickets are a great value!) without breaking the bank.
