Your resume’ is the first impression on employers and hiring managers. A survey report has indicated that hiring managers just take ten seconds to overview resume’, determining your presence in an interview or not.

If you are a fresh graduate with great GPA, shorthand courses and internship experiences, it will shuffle all your efforts if you have a poorly crafted resume’. To attract employer’s attention, you need to understand how to create well formatted resume’ and how to avoid deal breakers that block your chances for an interview.

Resume Mistakes that should be Avoided

1. Font, Format, Grammatical Errors

Selection of fonts depends on demand, but usually these should be of average size either in Times New Roman or Arial; usage of colors and fancy designs look unprofessional. Resume’ should be written without grammatical and spelling mistakes, paragraphs should be well spaced and concise.

It is preferred to divide your resume’ into four sections; Objective, Summary, Previous Work Experience and Educational Qualification.

2. Avoid Telling Tales

Resume should be brief, not advertising the tale of job hunters life, but aiming at job responsibilities of a person, mentioning strong points, especially training and certificates if any.

3. Remuneration

Salary or remuneration, you desire, must not be mentioned in resume’ until and unless it is asked by the employer.

4. Always attach Covering Letter

It shows job seeker’s competitive edge and intention to the employer; thus, must be specific for every company.

5. Stick to the truth

Bear in mind, if you are called for an interview, you have to defend your resume’; any inappropriate information, included in the resume’, can create an awkward situation for you.

6. Don’t stick to a single Format

Some employers want professional details while others may only want details of your skills. Always make changes before sending your resume’, according to employer’s demands and job description.

7. Do not mention References

References should only be provided if asked; it is much preferred to provide references after clearing first interview on a separate list; so that referees can provide accurate information to the employer. It is advisable to mention those names as references who know you well, providing their active contact numbers.

8. Do not provide your Photo

Do not attach photograph, until it is asked. If you are good looking, this could be an additional point for you, but it looks unprofessional.

9. Not having Active and Professional Email Address

Most job hunters make this mistake and do not provide an active professional email address; every single word on your resume’ creates your image and status in front of employers. Missing email id shows non seriousness of the applicant towards creating his/her resume and inscribes a negative image of yours in employer’s mind.

Job market is very competitive these days and if you have a well-formatted resume’, you can surely impress any employer.
